There are also other jobs in between these options that range from providing the content to organizing it to incorporating social media into an entire marketing strategy. The different jobs require various experience or education and provide different levels of income. Starting at the bottom is the content writer that can earn between $14,000 and $60,000 annually based on experience and the job demands. Public relations managers and social media strategists can earn six figures in the larger cities. How to Get Started If you want to know how mastering social media can turn into a career, you have to get away from your computer and meet the professionals. Attend events, conferences, and seminars on social media. Dont just sit in a corner and listen; use these opportunities to network. Pick the brains of those who are successful to find out what they did to get where they are. Social media is just beginning to be viewed as a viable career choice. Because of this fact, there arent a lot of training guidelines and requirements to go by. Instead, it is more important that you stay updated on changes in the industry. Know the latest technology and news about social media. You must know them in-depth, understand the newest tools and applications. You must know what is current, but also where social media is headed. Of course, some standard education will put you ahead of the game. A background in marketing and public relations or even journalism can give you an edge over the competition. Perhaps the best advice for people who want to have a career in social media is to develop a strong online presence on social networks. By creating networks and demonstrating your ability to gain a strong following, you can show your skills to potential employers. Finding Jobs Put your contact information on your sites to make it easy for people who stumble across your profiles to contact you. Join groups and establish strong profiles on networks such as LinkedIn to enhance your visibility. Also, dont be afraid to approach potential employers. See a company that youd like to work for that either doesnt have a social network nor has one that is ineffective? Send them a message and let them know how you can help them. You have to be able to tell companies why social media is important and why you are the right person for the job. As social media continues to grow and develop more credibility, more businesses and organizations will increase their interest in it. This means that there will be more jobs for people like you. Eataly Owner Joe Bastianich on Money Lessons amp; Career Advice

Eataly Owner Joe Bastianich on Money Lessons amp; Career Advice If anyone knows the value of a penny, it is the owner of a restaurant. The restaurant business is a notoriously difficult place to thrive, with almost all ventures going bust within a few years. Success is certainly possible, but you have to be a financial virtuoso, coaxing nickels and dimes out of every possible nook and cranny. That is something restaurateur Joe Bastianich, 47, learned at the feet of dad Felice, a talented restaurateur himself, and mom Lidia, who rose to fame with her own televised cooking shows. Bastianich is the force (along with famed chef Mario Batali) behind New York institutions like Babbo, Becco and Del Posto. His next project: Opening a new location of Italian food emporium Eataly at New York’s World Trade Center. For the latest installment of Reuters’ “Life Lessons” series, Bastianich talks about how to cook up a successful life. Q: As someone with such successful parents, what did you learn by watching them? A: The necessity and value of hard work. What my parents achieved is actually the classic storybook example of the American dream. They worked six to seven days a week for years running the restaurant in Queens. It took hard work and sacrifice to build Felidia, which is finally when we saw a little money as a family. My sister Tanya and I were practically raised in restaurants, so we saw first hand everyday what it took for my parents to achieve success. Q: What did the restaurant business teach you about finances? A: This industry is rife with opportunities to bleed money â€" you have to watch every nickel. The profit margin is notoriously low, and your whole management strategy needs to center around saving money and shaving down costs. Q: Apart from toiling in kitchens, what was your first job? A: I had a paper route in Bayside, Queens when I was 10. My nonna would get up early with me and help me roll the newspapers. Q: How did you get the right team in place around you, for helping achieve your financial goals? A: I think it really helps to employ like-minded people. People who see their job and their role in our restaurant group as much more than a paycheck are pretty essential at this point. Certain positions are offered incentive programs that involve profit-sharing. I think giving the right person a stake in what they toil over every day is not only the right thing to do, but helps to ensure success for all. People who understand the concept that your allocated cash flow â€" aka your paycheck â€" needs to be continuously earned to justify it. Q: Any role models you aspired to, who put you on the right path when you started achieving some success? A: In the early days after I opened up Becco, Drew Nieporent was real mentor to me. Drew was always very generous with his knowledge and experience, and treated me with respect even when I was 22 and had no clue what I was doing. Q: You must get approached for donations all the time, so how do you decide where to allocate your charitable money? A: A few years ago my mother Lidia and I started the Bastianich Scholarship Fund for my alma mater, the Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx. Over three years, our goal was to raise four fully endowed scholarships to deserving students who otherwise could not afford to attend. I’m very proud to say we reached that goal this past March. My education had a profound effect on me, and what I thought myself capable of at a young age. The recipients are truly great, smart kids, and I’m grateful to be in a position to give back. Q: What money lessons do you pass down to your own kids? A: My two oldest kids are just starting to work summer and part-time jobs. I think kids should experience work as soon as they are allowed to. There is no better way to teach them the value of money, than to have them experience just what it takes to earn it.

Want To Be Happy At Work 3 Things To Consider - Work It Daily

Want To Be Happy At Work 3 Things To Consider - Work It Daily Everyone wants to be happy at work. But here are somethings you should know. Let’s start with the bad news: Nearly a quarter of working Americans are unhappy with their jobs, according to a recent survey by Bellevue University. Now the good news: Those unhappy employees want to find jobs they actually like, according to the survey. Rather than just giving up on the idea of a happy job and surrendering to the conclusion that to work is to be unhappy, these people believe there is a better job out there for them. That’s optimism we can work with. How To Be Happy At Work If you’re ready to start looking for happiness at work, here are some things to think about to get you headed in the right direction: 1. Know Yourself If you don’t know what you want, you’ll never find it. Think about your favorite things about your current job and jobs you’ve held in the past, and think about your least favorite things (this might be a good time to make a list). What tasks do you most enjoy, and what skills do those tasks require? How do you like to work? Do you do your best work as part of a team, or do you thrive when you’re left alone? Is it your job that makes unhappy, or is it your career path? Once you know what will make you happy at work, you’ll be better positioned to go get it. 2. Consider Culture The term company culture is thrown around so much these days that it’s quickly approaching buzz word status. But culture isn’t just an empty idea bandied about by career coaches and HR types. It’s a real, overarching â€" if somewhat ambiguous â€" element that affects how happy and successful you are working for a particular company. Tom Armour, a former HR professional, calls cultural fit the “single most important element when hiring people.” “Skills and experience are very important, but if a person does not fit with the company’s culture they will either leave or be terminated usually in a matter of months,” he said. In general, culture consist of the values, customs and rules of engagement for a particular company. While it can seem intangible, company culture manifests itself in ways small and big, from how people dress while on the job to the way decisions are made and how employees are rewarded. If your goal is to be happy at work â€" and successful, for that matter â€" good cultural fit is crucial. Get a handle on a particular company’s culture by doing some online research. 3. Find purpose You’re more likely to be happy and engaged at work if you believe you are working toward a worthy goal. Autumn Burns, for instance, is a social media manager for a Nebraska company called Behaven Kids, which provides behavioral health services. Using her skills to support what she sees as a worthwhile pursuit adds purpose to Burns’ job. “I could do social media anywhere,” she said. “I really believe in what they do here.” No matter what field you work in or who your employer is, try to find purpose in what you do. That can range from saving the world to making people happy through good customer service. No purpose is too small. Photo Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!

3 Things Asian Women Are Sick of Hearing at Work

3 Things Asian Women Are Sick of Hearing at Work As a Korean-born woman who began working in corporate America in the 1990s, Ive experienced some situations that made me feel like I welches different, and as a result, felt like I did not belong. Being Asian, a woman, short, and looking young for my age, I have heard many statements that upset me over the years, and at times, those words preventedme from feeling included and inhibited my ability to excel in my work environment.Heres the caveat in the past several years, Ive worked in forward-thinking companies and have not come across the examples cited in this article. However, it wouldnt surprise me to learn that women of color, particularly Asian women, continue to experience ansicht frustrations at the workplace. Here are three things women of color are sick of hearing at work.1. You speak English so well You dont even have an accent.Ive heard this in many instances at the workplace. Sadly, Ive also heard from people, Youre Korean? You dont sound Korean The problem with these statements is that they are sweeping generalizations about Asians, pointing to an inaccurate perception that we look like foreigners, and therefore we should have accents. When I used to hear these statements, my initial reaction was confusion, followed by feelings of exclusion. It was a glaring reminder that I was differentfrom my peers and that I was surrounded by people with biases. As a rule, one shouldnt make the mistake of thinking that all people of color will sound the same. There may be commonalities amonggroups of people, but each person is unique, so its important to make an effort to get to know whats unique about a person and not to generalize.2. Are you an fr sich? When I was 30 years old, a man came into the break room at my office where I was pouring myself a cup of coffee. He asked me if I was an intern. Some may take it as a compliment if someone thinks theyre younger than they are. But this assumption also might have mea nt that the man assumed I was young, and therefore assumed that I didnt have as much experience as I did. In this situation, I thought the latter was true.As an Asian woman in corporate environments with many older, white male colleagues, Ive had to exert a lot of energy to show that I have a depth of professional experience. In the past, I have often felt like because of my appearance, I have had to prove my experience whenever I walked into meetings with senior-level people. Having to prove myself repeatedly was exhausting, and at times, counter-productive to my ability to add value to the environment. I ask thatpeople dont make judgments about someones experience level by mistaking their youthful appearance for inexperience or incompetence.3. Be more assertive. In some work environments, being loud or speaking up equates to confidence.Yet depending on a persons upbringing, experience, culture, and personality, her overall style of interacting with others at work will vary. With th at said, just because an Asian woman may not speak up in a meeting, it does not mean shes not engaged in the conversation. It may very well be that shes 1) processing the information, 2) coming up with a solution to the issue at hand, or 3) does not currently have anything to contribute to the conversation. Making judgments about someone because of how much or how little she speaks in meetings or other work settings is unfair. When Ive been exposed to negative sentiments inthe workplace, Ive found solace by connecting with other women of color. Without their understanding, support, and friendship, I would not have found a sense of belonging in the workplace. Now, as I think back on my experiences, I am sympathetic to others who may not have the benefit of connecting with colleagues and feeling a sense of belonging. I hope thateach one of us will make an effort to avoid making general statements about people of color, and instead, appreciate and respect each persons individuality.Yon Na is a leadership and organization development professional with 20 years of corporate experience.
